日本を出てから9ヶ月。中国、東南アジア、インド、中東を経て、ヨーロッパに入った。アジアや中東に不気味な恐れを抱いていた出発前。ヨーロッパまで行けば、安全で洒落た旅になると思っていた。憧れのヨーロッパ。辿り着いた感慨は多少あったかもしれない。しかし、重厚な建物、整備された石畳、街ゆく人々の目、都会の早く乾いた空気。安堵するはずだったその全てが、まるで長期貧乏旅行者を拒んでいるかのようだった。途方もない孤独を感じていた。
ユーラシア大陸陸路横断を決意したのは、1年前の6月だった。もっと言えば、高校3年のときに偶然手にした「深夜特急」を読んだあとだったかもしれない。
代々木の小さな製造装置メーカーの営業職として、国内や台湾などの半導体・液晶メーカーに自社の製造装置を販売する仕事をしていた。大した結果も残せずに悶々としていた3年目の春。柔道整復師の学校に通っていた兄同然の友人が、火事で大火傷を負った。蝋燭の火がカーテンに引火したのが原因だった。
「今しかない」と焦った。
いつ何時、事故や病気で自分の命が終わってしまうかもわからない。やりたいことをするべきだ。僕のやりたいことは、この会社で10年間勤勉に働いて、部長になることじゃない。沢木耕太郎のように世界を旅したい。ユーラシア大陸横断だ。25歳のなんとも青臭い決断だった。
ブルガリアの首都ソフィアのユースホステルで地図を広げて頭を抱えていた。
旧ユーゴ圏に入り、イタリア・フランス・スペインの南ヨーロッパ諸国を抜けて、最短距離と時間で目的地のロカ岬に行くか、北上して東欧、中欧、ドイツを経由し、オランダ人の友達レネの住むアムステルダムに寄っていくか。資金が続くかどうかという問題だ。
手元のトラベラーズチェックは、9ヶ月の節約生活にも関わらず、頼りない厚さになっていた。インドで会ったブラジル人女性に奢ったことを後悔した。彼女の食事代や長距離電車賃を負担してしまった自分を責めた。ムンバイで少年団にスラれた600ドルも痛かった。スラれたにも関わらず、直後にマクドナルドのマハラジャバーガーなんか身に余る高価なものを食べたのも反省すべき点だ。決して金がないのに女の子に奢ってしまったり、やけになって必要のないモノを買ってしまうのは僕の悪い癖だ。中国からお腹に巻いてきたマネーベルトは、そんな衝動的な出費も響いて、予定よりかなり薄くなっていた。いくら数えても、西ヨーロッパの物価の高さを考えたら、ドイツやフランスで悠長にビールやワインを楽しむなんて到底できそうにもなかった。
